In Their Shoes

While running in Hamburg…

November 2, 2017

The best thing about running in Hamburg? The preformed, 7.5KM running route around the Aussenalster. The river was dammed up years ago to create a recreational lake for watersports, kids playgrounds and lakeside dining.

Pick anywhere on the lake, choose your running direction, and just start running… take in the views across the city, enjoy the greenery and flowers and watch the KM tick by on the flat paved trail.

Add some extra KM by adding a loop of the smaller Binnenalster lake directly in Hamburg town centre by ducking under the Kennedy bridge. (You can stop into the one of the cafes there for rehydration – the ones along the lake are less than helpful!).

After spending a sunny weekend in the city in March, just weeks before the Hamburg Marathon it was clear that Hamburg is a city for runners. The trails around the lake were packed with those training for the marathon, fathers pushing their kids in strollers, ladies running and chatting, all using their Sundays to get in a quick workout.

If you’re there in the Summer, make sure to pack some Euros in your pockets to enjoy a lakeside ice-cream or boating adventure on the lake.

The city itself is very walkable or more importantly, runnable, with plenty of little parks nestled in residential spots, waterside trails and tree-lined streets. Plus, there are plenty of delicious post run refuelling spots.

Alternatively try this 7KM city route starting from the Holiday Inn Hamburg through some of Hamburg’s beautiful islands.
